Hola! So now that I have clandestinely ordered £130 worth of Space Wolf miniatures without my wife knowing (so keep it schtum...), I am ready to begin building my Bran Redmaw Great Company.
It looks like I will be waiting a while for Forgeworld to release the Bran Redmaw figures (yes, there are TWO - one for him in calmer times, another for his huge Redmaw Wulfen form), although I am bugging them regularly on their Facebook forum - cracking the whip, if you will.
So being the sneaky chap I am, I have 'acquired' the rule set for Bran Redmaw in the meantime - and there are a few of his special rules which will dictate how I build my army and how it plays.
First off, he has the Saga of the Hunter. This gives him Stealth. Also, he and any Fenrisian Wolves he leads may enter via reserve using the Outflank special move. This is nothing short of awesome, as it means no skulking at the back for most armies unless they literally cover the entire back and side lines (mentioning no names...)
Secondly, Bran has the Patient Hunter rule, which allows him to gift a unit of Grey Hunters the Infiltrate and Behind Enemy Lines special rule. This means tank killing melta guns can close quickly on enemy vehicles, or a swift strike against an Elite troop type can occur. At least, it is a diversionary tactic, immediately bringing the fight to the doorstep of your enemy and very handy for swooping on objectives early doors.
Lastly, Bran is fairly tasty in combat - he's no Ragnar, but hits on 3+, and has a Strength 5, reroll wounds attack (5 on the charge) - power weapon too. Ouch!
Where it gets interesting is his little werewolf problem - based on the number of the Turn, Bran transforms into a huge Wulfen creature called The Redmaw - SWEET!
He becomes a close combat monster, gaining Fleet, Furious Charge and Eternal Warrior amongst a whole host of other things. No power weapon attacks anymore, but at the head of a pack of ravening Fenrisian Wolves, this guy will be perfect for taking on that big Daemon or Tyranid construct.
So essentially, Bran's Great Company are hunters - they don't wait for the enemy to come to them, they bring it to the hizzle (ahem), so I'm thinking plenty of Wolf Scouts, Hunters, Sky Claws and Blood Claws, perhaps some bikes and Speeders.
And it only seems right that Bran should be accompanied by not only Fenrisian Wolves, but also the long awaited Thunderwolf Cavalry...thoughts on these shall wait until they arrive from Darksphere soon!
Let me know if you have any suggestions as to what might go nicely into Bran's Great Company, both fluff-wise and/or aesthetically. Perhaps Ulrik might need to keep an eye on him...

does that mean you're going to invest in the rather dodgy Cyberwolf model?
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately mate, with the club sporting a Blood angels army too, that makes your army "team jacob"....
I have no idea what that means, at a guess it's a reference to a girl's vampire/werewolf film...
ReplyDeleteI'm undecided about the Cyberwolf. I might just stick a computer chip on a Fenrisian's back. It is a bit clown shoes.
But, Forgeworld have produced some rather cool looking Wolf-type models that may just convert nicely into Wulfen with a few parts here and there...
also look into the old Inquisitor range. Enforcer Barbaretta came with a rather nifty Cyber hound. failing that, i'm sure Matt knows where to lay his hands on a few K-9 miniatures. :)
